World Sports Alliance Intergovernmental Organization Member State Model & Benefits

What is an Intergovernmental Organization?

An Intergovernmental Organization (IGO) is an organization composed primarily of sovereign states (referred to as member states) that are formed for some purpose that is of common benefit to its member states. An Intergovernmental Organization can only be established by a treaty that acts as a charter creating the group. Treaties are formed when lawful representatives of at least three sovereign state governments go through a ratification process, providing the IGO with an international legal personality. Intergovernmental Organizations are provided with privileges and immunities that are intended to ensure their independent and effective functioning. They are specified in the treaties that give rise to the organization (such as the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations and the Agreement on the Privileges and Immunities of the International Criminal Court), which are normally supplemented by further multinational agreements and national regulations. The organizations are thereby immune from the jurisdiction of national courts so that they are free of undue influence in order to fulfill their intended purpose.

An Intergovernmental Organization for Sport, Development and Peace

World Sports Alliance Intergovernmental Organization was formed in May of 2007, when the countries of Morocco, Niger and the Dominican Republic jointly executed the Rabat Declaration (E/2007/NGO/1), first circulated by H.H. King Muhammad VI of Morocco, and later presented in June, 2007, at a substantive session of an Annual Ministerial Review of UN-ECOSOC, held at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland. Other countries soon joined and now the World Sports Alliance stands officially at 33 member states as of December 31st, 2018. The stated mission of the World Sports Alliance is to use sports as a socio-economic development tool, in order to benefit the citizens of its member states with a focus on health, education, entertainment and leisure.

It is a commonly accepted principle that amateur sports fulfills a critical role in civil society from multiple beneficial areas including; health, education and nutrition amongst others. The importance of sports to humanity necessitates that there be an intergovernmental organization dedicated to amateur athletics as a means of empowering human development. At a time when climate change and other issues are surfacing as existential to humanity, it is only logical that sustainable development be a guiding principle to all intergovernmental organizations. Having intergovernmental status means that World Sports Alliance is free to execute its mission without undue influence from any one stakeholder, while existing for the ultimate benefit of all of its member states.

World Sports Alliance Model: No Fees to Member States

The World Sports Alliance Intergovernmental Organization model does not involve charging membership fees to the countries counted as member states. In the spirit of sports and entrepreneurship, as well as fulfilling its role as an economic development tool, World Sports Alliance is self funded through private-public partnerships and strategic trade initiatives amongst countries. Many of the World Sports Alliance member states are developing economies who benefit from the partnership and trade model. By working with the local economy based upon their needs and positive attributes, World Sports Alliance seeks to generate alpha and build equity as a means to finance its mission.

Financing World Sports Alliance through private-pubic partnership is a much more sustainable means of operating. While it involves more effort and skill, this approach also benefits World Sports Alliance member states. The intergovernmental aspect of the organization allows World Sports Alliance to move between two sovereigns in an effort to maximize economic output through trade and partnerships that might not have otherwise existed. Sports and youth development are effective means to bring countries together and cooperate for a brighter future. World Sports Alliance is proud to operate in this manner in the belief that it is better to earn money than receive it with no expectation of a result.

World Sports Alliance: Global Fitness Centers

A Holistic Approach to Human Empowerment and Sustainable Development

At the core of the World Sports Alliance IGO’s ability to execute its mission are the WSA Global Fitness Centers, designed to be a model of excellence in the area of sports and physical fitness. Each facility is to be geographically customized to meet the immediate needs of the member state where it is built. These fitness centers address multiple areas of civil society within the community beyond just sports and physical development. The World Sports Alliance approach to human development includes a holistic approach which includes: sports as a means of building values, physical fitness, mental well being, education, nutrition, entertainment and leisure activities. These areas of human development leave a lasting mark on the community with secondary benefits beyond those mentioned above, especially when youth sports is the focal point. WSA has experienced first hand that everyone wins when we all play sports, practice healthy habits and are educated on how to take better care of ourselves, respect our neighbors and sustain our planet.

Outcomes: World Sports Alliance Model

Sports – Fitness

It is a fact that when young people play sports they are healthier. The effects of playing sports as a young person is an investment into health that mitigates the effects of many medical conditions throughout the lives of that individual. Childhood obesity for example, can lead to multiple preventable diseases, not just when young but as the individual matures. Fitness is not just an option, but a practice that can lead to a longer and more satisfying life.

Coaching – Education

Coaching young people through sports is a form of education that can have multiple positive effects. The ability to learn through sports increases the mental concentration and focus of young athletes, as it combines cognitive learning with actions that have a measurable outcome. Thomas Edison said that “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” Nowhere else is this more true than in a sports environment.

Entertainment – Community

Quality of life is oftentimes measured using entertainment as a metric. Entertainment in a group setting is a proven way to build a solid community, as having social contact is a known factor of positive mental health and well being. Attracting desirable members to a given community includes quality of life activities, including entertainment, which can have a direct impact on building and maintaining a sustainable community.

League Play – Good Values

95% of Fortune 500 CEO’s played amateur sports. Learning to play a game with a set of rules teaches young people structure, communication, discipline, cooperation and the ability to work under pressure within a social system. These skills are desirable traits and instills values that allows young people to be successful members of society as adults. The numbers are clear, people are made better when they play sports as young people.

Nutrition – Health

Champions are made in the kitchen and when it comes to performing at optimal capacity nutrition is vital. This is true not just in sports, but also life in general. Good nutrition involves several factors; education, discipline and access to quality nutrients, which includes food as well as water. What we choose to put in our bodies has a profound effect on our overall health. WSA seeks to educate, instill discipline and bring access to quality nutrition for athletes.

Development – Peace

Economies are symbiotic ecosytems where the actions of one group affects the outcome of others. When prosperity is plentiful, we have a higher likelihood of peace. As an economic development organization, WSA is in a position to have a positive economic impact for its member states and its citizens.

WSA Principles: Sustainable Development

There are documented cases where economic development does not always have a positive outcome. When development takes place without proper long term planning and the only motive is profit, this usually ends poorly. Conversely, if one does not make a profit from their development activities, failure takes place which can also be counter-productive to a sustainable economy. As an economic development tool, World Sports Alliance believes that sustainable development is synonymous with long term profits. In the past, many believed that sustainability was a charitable act and would therefore avoid it. WSA exists in furtherance of The Sustainable Development Goals not only as a means to sustain the Earth, but also as an opportunity to flourish by embracing the latest in innovation and technology. Investing in technology is not only smart business, but leads to an increase in quality of life, as well as a decrease in suffering. One of the core values of World Sports Alliance is the belief that the key to solving the majority of the world’s problems lies in technological innovation, with sustainability as a guiding principle.
